‘Water’, an element of recreation, pleasure, relaxation and transportation, is the dominant feature of the Qingpu City urban design. It is located east of Waiqingsong Road, west of Tongsan Highway, north of 318 Highway and south of Yinggang Road. A system of canals and lakes, connect to the Dianpu River, north of and parallel to 318 Highway, is integrated into new areas on the south and north to give the residences the amenities of a ‘waterfront’ lifestyle.
The canal system emphasizes the man/city/water relationship. The international bridge design, a symbol landmark achievement is a demanding technical endeavor.
Parks, natural filters of air pollutants, follow the main water features and assist the ‘sustainable’ design of the development. Landscape and the neighbourhood parks form the central city park on the tree lined main city axis.
The city, an agglomeration of urban elements, features pedestrian friendly neighbourhoods with a central community park, transportation node, pre-school and elementary education facilities, convenience stores, and recreation grounds.
Narrow streets form ‘human scale’ urban spaces, and with landscaping form a street hierarchy. School locations are strategically positioned to avoid children crossng major traffic arteries. The retail, institutional and commerce uses convert the existing main traffic artery of Shanghai into an active and lively city ‘space’. The Qingpu Bridge and the neighbourhood system with distinct urban spaces and architectural features create a unique character and a sense of identity for the ‘centre’.
Qingpu’s 21st century development is toward it becoming a high technology centre. This will attract the next generation of young progressive entrepreneurs and their families. An exterior plaza on the edge of the future college campus will feature public outdoor screening of professional and student cinematography. A prime commercial office district is designed around the area of the future highway connection and provides convenient access throughout the region and the region and residual benefits from the existing education and transportation infrastructure.
