Shanghai Wuai High School
Developer:Luwan District Education Bureau

The Wuai High School property is south of the Zhongshan Road South to the north and Zhizhaoju Road to the west. The new school is to be constructed on the original site, consistent with the planning of the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai. The design concept is based on the premise that education is not isolated to education buildings. Dormitories and sports facilities for teaching and skill practicing reach out to the community at large and enhances the development of the student health, intelligence, communication and recreation with their peers.
?
The classrooms are at the west side of school site, west of the sports field with a 250 metre athletic track and the sports building. The existing buildings on each side are retrofitted as dormitories for student commons. The playground is amidst the classrooms and dormitory. The teaching complex, composed of several buildings with different functions, forms a semi-open space with green spaces and activity grounds that merge the interior and exterior spaces. A multi-purpose exterior ¡®gathering¡¯ space, for exhibitions, ceremonies and other activities, is at the centre of the teaching complex. The area is transparent with glass walls and roofless structural framing above. Sunlight is filtered through the structural frame and mechanical ventilation is avoided. A glazed enclosed corridor connects the buildings. The ¡®gathering¡¯ space provides students and teachers with an important means of collective communication for the student body association and other group activities. The sport building complex connects the dining room, auditorium, exercise area and gymnasium. The design concept presents a modern-style and youthful spirit that encompasses education as an ¡®original resource of knowledge¡¯.
